Abbeyfield Oxford is small and independent. It has its
own money and is managed by its own board of volunteer trustees.
It is important that this registered charity is supported and managed by
its local volunteers and not by large commercial or local authority organisations.
You can help in one of three ways—as a MEMBER or as a VOLUNTEER
or as a TRUSTEE
How can I help as a member ?
Membership gives you rights but no obligations—except to stump
up £1.00 should we go bust! You can vote at General Meetings,
and offer advice to the Trustee Directors on how to get things done.
How can I help as a volunteer ?
You will automatically become a Member. Additionally you undertake
a specific task for an agreed period each month. For example:
-
visiting residents
-
taking a resident to the doctor
-
gardening
-
helping with transport on outings
-
organising or assisting with social events
How can I help as a trustee?
A Trustee Director may choose to assist volunteer efforts but the main
task is to help manage the Society.
-
Committee duties are broken down into particular rôles, geared so
that each requires something specific from each member.
-
So every member has defined duties and, as all members are giving of their
time, these duties are structured to be specific and not open-ended.
-
The Trustees sit as an Executive Committee which meets six times a year.
What do I get out of being an Abbeyfield Member or
Volunteer?
You can:
-
use existing skills
-
use spare time usefully
-
gain experience and learn new skills
-
do something different
-
be part of a motivated team
-
improve the quality of life for local elderly people
What support is given?
-
An existing volunteer will give ongoing help as needed
-
Training is available for specific jobs
-
Personal Accident and Employer's Liability insurance are provided
-
Out of pocket expenses are reimbursed
